Number Concepts and Number Operations
In the delivery of this strand I have been utilizing the concepts of Trevor Calkins (math guru). He suggests that by teaching children to visualize a "ten frame" they learn to think in groups of five and ten, which greatly aid in leaning addition and subtraction skills. I have noticed that the Kindergarten children are also benefiting a great deal from the use of this program. I employ games during this time to emphasize the ten frame in a low stress atmosphere, thus making math fun and enjoyable.
Kindergarten
children are taught to recognize the numbers 0 - 10( this also includes being
able to print their numbers) and to match a number with the correct number of
objects. Learning to count forward and backward will help them when they are
introduced to addition and subtraction. "Adding on" is also taught
at this grade, that is having the children start at a random number and have
them continue to count, again this is a skill used in addition.
In
Grade1 the students are expected to know the numbers up to 100. They should
be able to count by 2's, 5's and 10's up to 100 as well as counting forward
and backward. They too should be able to "add on" from any number
under 100. Learning to add and subtract numbers up to 18 is also expected by
end of this grade.
